NY Times article about slower marathoners
I just finished reading this....kind of interesting. I guess personally, I could care less if slower runners run the marathon or not. There was a group of about 6 who trained for my last marathon. I mostly ran with one other girl since she was the same pace as I am; the others were a bit slower than us. And even though they ended up running the marathon about an hour and a half slower, they still finished it. Do I think they "ruined" the race; nope. Do I get the points about increasing costs by keeping it open longer...sure, and if that's the reason they have a time limit I totally understand. But lets not create a time limit just to keep the mystique of the marathon there. I have yet to come across a person who thinks a marathon is easy! Although I am really surprised to read that only 20% of last year's NYC Marathon participants finished in 5:30 or less. I never realized such a large group finished slower than that!

Hi there - coming over from Lil Runner's blog. What an interesting article. I am a slower runner, it takes me about 4:30 to finish a marathon, but I am shocked to learn that that few people finished NYC in under 5:30! That's just crazy.
Well, I'd like to say that I think it is OK for anyone to run a marathon and hard no matter how long the distance...but certain grad school friends would remind me about the time that I drunkenly yelled out of the car to a largely obese man plodding up a hill: "WHY DON'T YOU JUST WALK???" Not one of my prouder moments, but it is one of their favorite stories to tell about me:> I do think that their should be a cutoff time, though. I tend to think that if someone is getting out there and being active and the best they can do is 15 minute miles, then good. Hopefully some day they'll be in better shape. Better than having them sit on a couch eating PB from the jar...oh wait... :>
THERE instead of their. I wish there was an edit button.
I just read that too - interesting. I say, good for them running it! They are still a part of 1% of the population or whatever the # is.
hi! i saw your blog link on lil runner's blog and thought i'd say hi since i'm training for philly too ;)
Nice blog, I forget where I came from...regarding seeing your blog but that's a great article. I think everyone should run...and take as long as needed.
Good luck with your training for philly...you're on your way!
HOPE you enjoy the recovery socks! :)) ENJOY! Jerome (hubby) and I were just talking about all of this...I am fine with all levels doing the marathon - we have the same discussion about the Ironman too - but there is a cut off for that too. As long as the athelte respects the distance and work that both require, I am ok with it. :))
